The Ranking System in Halo: Reach is based on Credits (cR) earned through Forge, Multilayer, campaign and Firefight matches. Players earn credits after every game and they can earn extra Credits for medals earned during that game such as double-kills, victory bonuses, Commendations and Daily/Weekly challenges.
Credits earned towards a player's rank can be used to purchase various armor permutations from the armory Players can view some additional armor that they can't purchase at their current rank. Credits spent on Armory purchases do not decrease a player's rank.
Playing offline is the easiest way for players to earn Credits in either Custom Games or in Forge mode. Once an account has been connected to Xbox LIVE, however, credits earned in any mode are significantly reduced from those awarded for playing offline.
An account that has not been connected to Xbox LIVE but has earned credits and ranks from offline modes will lose both several ranks and a large amount of credits after being connected for the first time.
